Tree root grinding in Ocala, FL
Big oaks and other trees often leave thick roots running across the lawn, even after the stump is gone. They trip people, snag mowers, and make it hard to grow grass. A stump grinder can grind those surface roots down below the soil.

- Roots are a tripping hazard near walkways or play areas.
- You're installing a fence, edging, or a patio near where the tree stood.
Things to know first
Call 811
Roots often run near buried water, electric, irrigation, and cable lines. Call 811 (Sunshine 811) before any grinding to have them marked. It's free.
Living trees
Grinding roots off a tree that's still standing can damage or kill it and may make it less stable. If the tree is alive, talk to an arborist first.
Near foundations and slabs
Roots can be ground up to the edge of concrete, but not underneath it.
Cost
Root grinding is usually priced on top of the stump, based on how many roots and how far they run. See the cost guide for typical stump prices.
Root grinding questions
Can tree roots be ground without killing the lawn?
Grinding surface roots does tear up the grass right over the root, but the strip is narrow. Fill with topsoil and reseed or patch with sod afterward.
Can roots under my driveway be ground out?
Not without breaking the concrete. Grinders can remove roots up to the edge of a slab, but roots underneath usually have to stay unless the concrete is being replaced.
Is root grinding included with stump grinding?
Usually not. The stump itself is included, but grinding roots that run out across the yard is often priced as an add-on. Ask when you call.
