Stump grinding questions
Straight answers to what Ocala-area homeowners ask most about stump grinding.
How much does stump grinding cost in Ocala?
Most single stumps run roughly $100 to $400. Size, number of stumps, access, and cleanup all affect the price. See the cost guide for details.
Do I need a permit to grind a stump in Ocala or Marion County?
Grinding a stump from a tree that's already down usually doesn't need a permit, but rules can vary. Check with the City of Ocala or Marion County if you're unsure.
Do I need to call 811 first?
Yes. Grinding goes below ground, so call 811 (Sunshine 811) a few business days ahead to have underground utility lines marked. It's free.
How deep does stump grinding go?
Usually several inches below ground, commonly about 6 to 12 inches. Ask for a deeper grind if you plan to plant or build in that spot.
How long does it take?
A single small or medium stump often takes 15 to 45 minutes. Very large stumps or many stumps take longer.
What happens to the wood chips?
They're left on site unless you pay to have them hauled away. Many people use them as mulch or to fill the hole.
Will the stump grow back?
Most don't. Some hardwoods can send up small sprouts from leftover roots, which you can cut back as they appear. Pines generally don't resprout.
Can palm stumps be ground?
Yes. Palm stumps grind easily and quickly compared with hardwoods.
Can I plant grass or a new tree in the same spot?
Yes. Rake out most of the chips, fill with topsoil, and let it settle before planting. For a new tree, ask for a deeper grind and plant slightly to one side if you can.
Do old stumps attract termites?
Decaying wood can attract termites and other insects. Grinding removes most of that wood. If you're concerned about termites near your home, talk to a pest control company.
Do chemical stump killers work?
They can speed up rot, but it often takes months or longer and you still have to remove what's left. Grinding is same-day.
Who will actually do the work?
An independent local stump grinding company. This site is a referral service. When you call, you're connected directly to them. They quote the job, do the work, and you pay them directly.
